The Department of Applied Macromolecular Chemistry has taken up the tradition of the former Unidad de Química Macromolecular which was operating in the ancient Instituto de Plásticos y Caucho for many years since 1955. In 1989, this Research Unit was renamed Departamento de Química Macromolecular and integrated in the departmental structure of the institute that also changed its name to Instituto de Ciencia y Tecnología de Polímeros.
On readjusting the organization of departments ordered by the CSIC in 2010, three research groups have gathered within the Department of Applied Macromolecular Chemistry:
Group of polycondensation and polymer membranes
Group of photochemistry of polymers
Polymers functionalization group
All the three groups have in common the strategy that apply to their research activities, which is characterized by the preparation of monomers and polymers, by means of virtually all the known polymerization techniques, and by the evaluation of properties and potential applications as advanced materials. A special issue of the department as a whole is to maintain a balanced work activity shared between basic, applied and innovative Polymer Chemistry, with the ultimate aim of contributing to the development of novel materials for advanced technologies.
