BIOPIELTEC-CM
Image Description
Its main objective is to improve both the methods of manufacture of biological (artificial) tissues, from 3D bioimpresion techniques, and their functionalities (biological and non-biological), using as a model system the most extensive organ of the human body: the skin, although the techniques and concepts that it intends to develop are likely to be applied to other tissues and organs. The choice of the skin as an initial model tissue/organ is based on two important reasons, on the one hand, the experience that in this organ have several groups of the consortium and, on the other hand, the global demand for artificial skin both for clinical use in treatment of healing and skin regeneration (especially in burnt grades), as for the testing of medically and cosmetic products. The expected results of the project include the construction of new 3D skin bioprinters and the development of new bioinks that would allow the manufacture of novel Epidermal Dermo Equivalents (EDE) with (i) advanced biological functionalities (incorporation of immune system, new dermal matrices more complex and stable and complex structures such as hair follicles) that is, more similar to human skin than existing ones, and (ii) specific sensor functionalities so far not existing for follow-up once inserted into animal models (murine and pig) and, eventually, in patients.
